Abstract: The paper describes a techniaue of modelling urban tissues which incorporates the behaviour and perceptions of local inhabitatnts. This is done by analysing the way in which urban developmnent, perception and coding intersect with the human phenomenon of language. This is followed by discussion of a pilot study where people talk about their urban activities, and the method is used to retrieve information about the way in which the town is perceived and functions.
