Abstract: Critical review of neo-traditional developments, examining the intellectual origins of the development type, and arguing that the neo-traditional development is a niche market forming following the fragmentation of the suburban housing market generally. The success of the type is explained using reference to Bourdieu's concept of the Habitus: a system of values, dispositions and practices adopted by a societal group - in this case the cnsumers of the environment.
