Village Don't Make A City

Author: Biddulph, M J
Publish date: 2000
Journal: Journal of Urban Design, Vol 5 (1)
Pages: 65 - 82
Abstract: The paper reviews the physical origins of the urban village concept. It argues that the concept includes two components: principles of good urban design, and a macro-concept which seeks a polycentric form of urbanism. It is argued that there is little evidence to suggest that this polycentrism is necessary or desirable, and that emphasis on urban villages may be detracting without justification from what may be other viable urban forms.
