September 2006, Markets as sites for social interaction: spaces of diversity By Sophie Watson with David Studdert, JRF
This project was set up to explore the importance of markets as social spaces in towns and cities in the UK. Despite some local variation, many local retail markets have been in decline over the past 20 years. Typically, they have suffered from a distinct lack of investment, with local authorities choosing to finance capital programmes in services that are deemed to be a higher priority, such as education, housing and social services (NABMA, 2005).

Report Summary for CPRE and the Countryside Agency

Some say new roads are the answer to congestion problems, but we believe that road-building generates traffic, encourages development and scars the landscape. Beyond Transport Infrastructure analyses Highways Agency data and finds the benefits of road-building are often, at best, unproven. Its recommendations promote more informed decision-making on road transport schemes.
