design champions
'I see the role of the design Champion largely as a administrative/political one - someone who can knock heads together and make various departments sit around the table together. For Design Champions to get involved in the day to day advice that is necessary is unworkable. Design review panels are a better system to improve quality, because the advice is coming from their peers which demands the respect of architects. I believe very strongly that design officers need the additional support that design review panels can offer - informal advice, mentoring and so on. (otherwise it can be a very lonely and isolating experience!) I would like to see planning members get more training. I agree evenings would be good and they also have to be affordable. But the problem is a big one and is never 'solved' because members change. I have seen my members debate a scheme for over an hour and the main point of concern was whether windows should open inwards (not good for curtains and nic knacks) or outwards. 50 sweet old ladies attended committee that night which justified the length of the debate I'm sure! On the same agenda, a major redevelopment at an important site designed by a internationally recognized architect went through for approval and not a question about design! They understand windows but have less confidence about major redevelopments. I think if we are honest, an afternoon of training will not make a dramatic difference. Truth is we all have a long way to go....'

The event on the 9th was excellent, it is just a shame that I could not persuade our councillor to attend. I have nevertheless implored our design champion to attend the next one, and forwarded the email on future events. It is v important UDL keep up the good work, politicians can have such an impact in unlocking problems they just haven't woken up to it yet - except for DM - with a few more like him, particularly if they are represented across the political divide, there is a chance it might catch on! from a Borough urban design officer
