research to discover 'good practices' of the application of planning support systems
Dear colleagues,
We are undertaking research to discover ‘good practices’ of the application of Planning Support Systems (PSS) in planning practice. We define these PSS as geo-information technology based frameworks, consisting of information, modelling, analysis, and visualization tools that are dedicated to support specified planning tasks (scenario development, monitoring, sketching, evaluations). PSS run from simple geo-data viewers to advanced spatial modelling systems, all with the common element of being focused on the support of specific planning tasks.
Recent studies indicate an overall lack of acquaintance and experience with PSS among the broad range of potential users of the technology (Vonk 2006). Our aim is to collect and disseminate up-to-date experiences on the use of PSS for planning purposes. From our research, we hope to gain further insight in the role that PSS can successfully play to support planning activities. On request, we will be very happy to share with you the outcomes of our research directly.
If you have been involved (as a consultant, planner, scientist, politician, GIS-researcher) in a planning process in which a PSS was used, directly or indirectly, we would like to ask you to help us out in this research by filling out this inquiry (10 minutes).

Please be so kind to fill out the form before February 28, 2007.
Well-known examples of PSS entail Community-Viz, Mapsup, Sleuth, Urban-Sim, Moland and What-If (for overviews of PSS, see Brail & Klosterman 2001; Geertman & Stillwell 2003).
