Nottingham’s Old Market Square takes public realm awards

The redevelopment of Nottingham’s Old Market Square has won three awards from the Civic Trust. Old Market Square won public realm; hard landscaping and a regeneration awards, beating a shortlist of 100. The awards aim to encourage projects that are culturally, socially or economically beneficial, and make a positive contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment.

Gustafson Porter’s reinvention of the Old Market Square – one of the oldest and largest public squares in the UK - used high quality materials, includes a stunning water feature and seating terraces, improves accessibility for all and enables the square to be used for a wide range of events, including the current staging of the Nottingham Eye.

Councillor Alan Clark, Portfolio holder for Neighbourhood Regeneration, said: ' I think the Old Market Square richly deserves its success at the Civic Trust Awards. We’re really proud of the new look of the Old Market Square – it has surpassed our expectations in terms of its renewed popularity as a destination and its ability to stage large-scale events that were not previously possible.

"I feel that it is inspiring, provides a memorable experience and engenders a sense of communal well-being. I expect it will become an important landmark, drawing interest from people around the country, and will play a part in Nottingham’s ongoing regeneration.'
