Technology, people, place and space: ideas for urban modelling, mapping and liveability

Technology, people, place and space

RUDI's knowledge-sharing event debated the subject of technology, people, space and place.

There was plenty of time for sharing and collecting information, and the lively discussion is available to view, by clicking the link abaove, in video/multimedia format, as are the individual presentations

This event was also webcast live with the assistance of Richard Jolly

The issues discussed included:

  • Real time data collection methods and parametric modelling at the urban scale
  • The future possibilities of ‘remote control urbanism’
  • The emotional mapping of space
  • The latest design and promotional uses for 3D city models and 3D software
  • Using public data to map how people wish to live and work
  • Web mash-ups using Google Earth and Maps and other mapping sites

Noah Raford, US director, Space Syntax: real time data collection methods, parametric modelling at the urban scale, and remote control urbanism

Noah is a researcher at the Department of Urban Studies at MIT. Space Syntax takes an evidence-based approach to the planning and design of buildings and cities, using advanced computer modelling technologies. Noah will talk about real time data collection methods, parametric modelling at the urban scale, and future possibilities of ‘remote control urbanism’

Chris Sharpe, co-founder, Holistic City: computers in design: the perception agenda

Chris Sharpe co-founded Holistic City Software with Svet Pelipenko in 2005. He has led the development of CityCAD, a software tool integrating design, planning, movement, environmental, liveability and viability analysis into masterplanning. Chris trained as an architect and has worked as an masterplanner/urban designer

Michael Kohn, director, Slider Studio: DIY urbanism – pattern books + design codes = sustainable, large volume self build projects

The youcanplan project is exploring ways in which the planning system can support pre-approval for enabled self build community schemes, based on design rules or codes. The youcanplan software will support the design initiative

Inderpaul Johar, director, 00:/ research: Socio-technologies and analysing use – the impact of rising levels of mobility on the neighbourhood

00:/ is a young, London-based research- and strategy-led architecture practice, focused on designing and delivering projects driven by a people-centred sustainability agenda. Currently 00:/ is involved in several pieces of research examining the impact of rising levels of mobility on the neighbourhood and the home

Tom Steinberg, founder, mySociety: enabling with technology: re-using public data to create tangible civic benefits for communities

mySociety builds websites which give people simple, tangible benefits in the civic and community aspects of their lives, including community engagement/management, civil rights and transport/travel planning advice. Tom Steinberg, the project’s founder, is a ‘Westminster policy wonk and technology aficionado’

Christian Nold, director, Softhook: participatory mapping projects: encouraging local communities to explore, reflect upon and map their local areas

Christian is an artist, designer and educator involved in participatory mapping projects encouraging local communities to explore, reflect upon and map and re-map their local areas, including Greenwich, Newham, Stockport, San Fransisco and Fulham. The Stockport project involved working with developers to assess community aspirations
