Anna Minton: public and private spaces

Anna Minton: public and private spaces
The presentation will outline the changing nature of contemporary public space as more of the public realm comes under private ownership and control. It will outline the legislative and policy changes behind this process and paint a picture of what it means for citizens, the public, urban designers and artistsOne of the consequences of the growing privatisation of public space is a more controlled and restricted environment where risk is minimised, creating sterile and monocultural environments.
There will be times when designers and artists will be asked to work within this new context and they need to ask: what is the space for?
Within this changing context, much of the urban environment remains public, leaving considerable scope for more traditional ways of working.
Here is my view.
