Artist's Style
Wolfgang Buttress creates simple, elegant and contextual sculptures which seek to define and celebrate a sense of place. Born in 1965 and originally from the Lake District, England he has a BA Hons in Fine Art from Trent Polytechnic. His studio and workshop is in Nottingham. He set up award winning Art and Landscape architecture practice Wolfgang and Heron (2000- 2006) and now works individually as an artist .
Working in a variety of materials including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, glass, concrete, stone and light, Wolfgang Buttress has, over the last 15 years, produced artworks for the public realm in the UK, Europe and the USA. Inspired by the work of artists and architects such as Ando, Brancusi, Saarineen, Tapies and Twombly, his work alludes to histories, traces and memories which are both personal and contextual.
His experience includes working collaboratively with a wide range of professionals, most recently with architects and landscape architects such as Tadao Ando, BDP, and Conran and Partners. His work has recently been exhibited in the prestigious Chicago Sculpture Biennales in 2006 and 2008. He has recently won 2 prestigious Civic Trust Award-in March 2008 the 'Silica' landmark sculpture for the centre of Weston-super-Mare and in March 2009 for his work on the Stamford Gateway project

Wolfgang Buttress has his own limited company which acts as the main contractor for the fabrication of the artwork. This allows for comfort in working within given budgets and deadlines.
He has over 20 years experience in working in this field. He designs and project manages all of his projects which range in scale, complexity and budget from £50,00 to £600,000. He has an assistant and 2 designers as part of his studio practice in Nottingham . He carries fully relevant Public Liability and Indemnity insurances.
