modern methods of construction for mixed use schemes – six project overviews from omp

O’Mahony Pike Architects are best known for their work on innovative and high density residential schemes and are currently the leading Irish practice in this area of design. We also participate in a wide range of commercial and mixed use projects both in the private and public sector.

A staff of 100+ is now employed in the practice which has been at the forefront in the introduction of new technology as applied to management and design procedures and is now fully computerised.

The company has wide experience in all types of mixed use design particularly in speculative private development. Since the founding of the original partnership in 1964, over 40,000 dwellings have been completed with 15,000 currently at different stages of development. We are also involved in master planning 3 new rail based communities on the perimeter of Dublin with a potential for over 150,000 population. Further substantial urban development schemes at transport based locations in Dublin and Cork are also being designed by the practice.

These project overviews illustrate the practice’s use of the precast project cycle that allows fast, cost effective development of affordable housing and other structures.

Millennium Park, Charlotte Quay: residential/mixed use

A mixed development at Ringsend Road and Charlotte Quay, Dublin 4 on 1.53 acres for Zoe Developments. This waterside site is located at a focal point in the Grand Canal Docks rejuvenation Area, an area now entering a phase of major redevelopment.

Herbert Park: residential/mixed use

The project, completed in 1998, has received the URBAN DESIGN AWARD presented by Irish Planning Institute. The jury stated that the promenade has become 'an elegant thoroughfare and vibrant meeting place - a place of real civic status!' and that 'the successful transformation of this redundant industrial site has been clearly facilitated by the adoption of coherent planning design objectives which serve not only to exploit the amenity potential of its river and parkland context, but also to enhance and revitalise Ballsbridge'.

Mount St Anne’s: residential

The site for this residential development served as farmland for St. Ann’s Convent, the mother house of the Irish Sisters of Charity. The Victorian Convent buildings and Chapel are being altered and extended to provide residential accommodation, whilst Milltown House, a listed late Georgian style building, retains its office/administrative usage and is being refurbished.

Glasnevin: residential

Located in Glasnevin along the Tolka river valley, this residential scheme comprises 241 units ranging from duplex to two-bed apartments to three-storey houses. The site layout takes advantage of the existing severely sloping topography to maximise site transparency affording views over the Tolka and proposed sports centre to the botanic Gardens and beyond to the Dublin mountains.

Cherry Orchard: affordable residential development

O’Mahony Pike were winners of a design competition sponsored by Dublin Corporation to prepare proposals for an affordable housing Development at Cherry Orchard. Procurement is proposal by way of a Public Private Partnership contract and the development team comprises Park Developments, Sisk Contractors and DBFL Structural Engineers.

Cedarbrook

Cederbrook is a development of 376 affordable duplex units, apartments and townhouses on a 10.65 acre site to the west of Dublin City Centre in Cherry Orchard. The Hanover Quay project is located on a 3-acre site at the heart of the new Dockland Development area overlooking Grand Canal Harbour to the south and the River Liffey to the north.
