This 20,500 m2 civic office forms the initial stage of a masterplan (submitted in parallel for outline planning consent by Collado Collins Architects) to regenerate an important town centre site in Woolwich. It will consolidate the council’s operations, creating a new civic quarter for Woolwich. Putting urbanism back into British cities: lessons from the USA

In June, I attended a four day conference where the best urban design minds were concentrated on the creation of suburban housing and on the value of traditional architecture, where there was high quality debate on the intricacies of highway design and the needs of pedestrians, and where the UK's Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, received a standing ovation for articulating current initiatives in national planning and urban design policy in his speech.

Amid the roaming chickens, sheep and adventure climbing frames of the immaculate Coram's Fields in central London, it is hard not to be overtaken by a sense of relaxation far removed from the bedlam of the thick traffic and cluttered streets less than100 yards away. Not by accident was this venue chosen for the launch of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment's CABE Space unit last week.
