Communities should 'compete to be spotless': 30 million tonnes of litter collected from streets each year, says report

March 10, 2009 - Litter is an eyesore for everyone, and figures show the ugliness has significantly increased in the last thirty years, along with a substantial list of associated problems. It is illegal to drop litter under section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and local authorities can issue fixed penalty fines of £80 for each offence or go to court and issue a fine of up to £2,500. more >

Estate management 'hit squad' to bet set up by housing association with help from Job Centre

October 24, 2008 - A 'Tidy' estate hit squad is being set up to tackle problems like graffiti on Chester-le-Street’s housing estates. Cestria Community Housing has asked Job Centre Plus to help them recruit a team to clean up everything from graffiti to grass cutting. The Chester-le-Street based housing association is setting up a new service for their tenants to improve the quality of the estates. more >

London council pioneers new technology aimed at coordinating roadworks to minimise disruption

September 10, 2008 - There are currently about 14,000 holes dug in the road every year in Camden, and utility companies are responsible for most of these. Added to its own road works, the council is using a technology system to capture all this information and make it available to the public.
